I should listen to my friends: Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

Geek Love has been on my reading list for years, recommended by a number of people with excellent quirky book taste. Watch me as I kick myself for waiting so long to read it.

The premise is delightfully strange: We start with Ma and Pa Binewski, carnies who decide to ensure their financial longevity by breeding their own freak show through a succession of births altered by the ingestion of all sorts of drugs. This leads to the birth of our narrator Olympia, a bald, hunchbacked dwarf who is, to her regret, the most normal of her siblings — a pair of Siamese twins, Arturo the Aqua Boy (born with flippers), and Fortunato, also known as Chick – a seemingly normal boy who is more fantastic than all of his siblings put together.

The family saga that unfolds is supremely bizarre and equally poignant, challenging the very notions of beauty and freakishness with a power that earned the book a National Book Award nomination.

I liked it. Yeah, it was like reading a train wreck, but it was a good book–changed my attitudes a bit–definately an anti-smug talisman.
